As its 2015 album A Head Full of Dreams nears its first birthday, Coldplay is back at work, assuring fans even more new music is on the way. On Monday (Nov. 21), band leader Chris Martin announced that the quartet plans to release a new EP next year.
The out-of-the-blue unveiling of the Kaleidoscope EP comes weeks after Coldplay announced a 2017 North American arena-stadium tour to go along with previously-known European dates for the new year. So far, no other Kaleidoscope details (release date, track list, etc.) are known, though its name comes from an interlude track on the 2015 album. in addition to complementing the multi-colored, spectrum-covering aesthetic of virtually all Coldplay-related artwork since.
The narrative around that release was often fixated on the assumption it was Coldplay’s final album (“This is the completion of something,” Martin told BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe in late 2014), so this news confirms it at least won't go down as the band's final collection of new music. Back on Nov. 11, Coldplay officially released a new, stripped-down version of the Dreams track "Everglow," inspired by its 2016 Glastonbury Festival performance. Coldplay’s last announced gig comes Oct. 8, 2017, in San Diego; beyond that, we’ll have to wait for more band-related activity.
